My feelings toward Jalmari have become conflicted thanks to this novella. Before this novella I didn't feel that Jalmari was capable of being a decent vampyre, but after reading this novella, I have come to see that Jalmari hasn't always been the evil vampyre he appears to be in the first two books of the Ema Marx series. I could see his love for Leena in Dark Heirloom, but it was nothing compared to the love he displays in this novella. I am hoping Jalmari can become the kind man he use to be back in ancient Athens, Greece in the further installments of the Ema Marx series.

Now, let's talk about the most important character in this novella, Leena. I was completely taken away by the sweet, innocent Leena that we are introduced to in this novella. Leena was a entirely different person in this novella that she was in Dark Heirloom. At the beginning of Dark Heirloom I did't like Leena one bit, but by the end of the book I had grown to like her. I can see the pieces of the Leena I like at the end of Dark Heirloom in this novella. My guess is that the centuries of being a vampire who was looked down upon is what changed Leena's attitude into the one we meet at the beginning of Dark Heirloom. At the beginning of Dark Heirloom I had this feeling that I'll somehow like Leena by the end of the book, I guess my instincts were right.

All in all, I liked this book. i'm usually not a big fan of novella's because I like long stories, not short ones. But this one keep me interested and was long enough and well-developed enough that I felt like I was reading a novel vs a novella. I also loved learning about how Jalmari and Jesu's mother died and how their father became powerful enough to be able to control Jalmari whenever he felt like it. This novella provided a look into the past, which in return provided a better understand of the world we were thrown into along with Ema in Dark Heirloom. Amazing novella and I can't wait to read further books written by J.D. Brown.
